Why I Do what I Do....

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 3:20
I have a story that starts  like so many, I grew up in the church. I knew all of the Bible stories from my years in Sunday school but none of the stories became my own. The God who came near to so many in the Bible, seemed very distant to me. Experiences in my young life left me doubting the God I was learning about, but that all change when I turned 19.

On October 4, 1991, my pursuit for satisfaction led me to a bar in downtown Grand Rapids. I frequented this spot often but this night was different. As I headed into the establishment I heard what seemed to be an audible voice telling me to “go home”. I sat down on one of those cement blocks you find in a parking lot and stared at the door trying to muster the courage to go in but when I tried I heard that voice again telling me, “go home”. I realized that this was no ordinary voice and this was no ordinary moment. God was reaching out to me in a way that made it impossible for me to deny Him and I didn’t. I finally surrendered and went “home”. The next morning, I found myself at a church and when the opportunity arose, I went to the altar and asked Christ to be MY LIFE and life has not been the same since.

It is because of that encounter and the many encounters with my Heavenly Father since then, I have said a complete YES to the One who saved me. I am grateful for His mercy and the grace He has given me. So, the best response and only response to what He has done is to spend my life as clay in His hands.

This is why I do what I do.
How I Do What I Do...
It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God.
2 Corinthiasn 3:5
I have had the the gift of gab since my first words and I have been singing since I was six. I am wired an extrovert and those two gifts fit well in an extroverts tool box. I am strong because of the legacy of strong women who have sown into my life and I am confident becasue of a Godly mother who told me I could be.  But all these don't tell how I do what I do.

I have a bachelors degree and will soon have a masters degree. I can draft an intelligent argument and use my vocabulary to have a conversation with anyone.  But even that is not how I do what I do. The reality is, while all of the things I mentioned have helped to shape me, they don't explain how I am able to do the ministry that God has called me to do. Paul had an incredible pedigree but even he acknowledged that all of his background was rubbish and the only thing that mattered was the power of the Living God giving him what He needed to accomplish what He called Him to do.

I live in Paul's declaration! I am able to do what I do because God enables me. He fills me with His Spirit and His anointing rest on my life.

And that is how I do what I do.
Where I do what I do...
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Act 1:8
My life experiences, cultural experiences, work experiences and educational experiences have provided me with a wealth of knowledge that makes it easy for me to navigate diverse settings. One of the greatest gifts of my faith journey was the profound revelation that I am created in His image and not only that, I share this fact with every person on the earth.  This truth speaks to the value we all have in God's eyes Knowing this and believing this at my core removes limitations of where I can or cannot go. So, I will go where ever and whenever He leads.

This truth finds me with people who look like me and share my culture and those who don't. This truth finds me on platforms, in pulpits, at colleges, on discussion panels, in food pantries, in classrooms and community organizations. This is my truth because I will go wherever He invites me to be a part of what He is doing.

Where He sends is where I will do what I do.
